Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which fat is removed from areas just beneath the skin. These fatty areas can be felt by pinching the skin. Areas that cannot be pinched, in general, cannot be removed. On the abdomen, there is fat beneath the skin that can be removed with tumescent liposuction. Behind the abdominal muscles there is fat that surrounds the intestines, called omentum. This fat cannot be removed using liposuction. In general, if one tightens their abdominal muscles one can feel the fat in front of the firm muscle. It is this fat that can be removed. In women, the muscular wall can loosen pushing the belly out. If this occurs, one may consider a tummy tuck.
