INTRODUCTION: Within the past decade, liposuction has become the most popular major cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. Since the invention of liposuction in the late 1970's by an Italian Gynecologist, one could alter ones body shape through tiny incisions (cuts) in the skin. In the 1980's, syringe lipo-sculpture was developed and disposable syringes were used to remove fat instead of machine aspirators, thus making it possible to measure precisely how mach fat was removed. Another advantage of syringe lipo-sculpture was the possibility to have the removed fat injected into other areas (fat transfer). In the late 1980's tumescent anesthesia was invented by a dermatologist and made all body contouring procedures safer and able to be performed as an outpatient procedure. In the early 1990's, ultrasonic liposuction become available and was hoped to allow one to remove more fat and tighten the skin than conventional liposuction. Unfortunately, neither proved true and few surgeons now perform ultrasonic liposuction. Liposuction is not a weight reduction
technique, but helps reshape one's figure by selectively removing unwanted fatty
deposits. It is well known that many people have certain areas that no matter
how much exercise or dieting one does, will not disappear. For most women, the
saddlebags, lower abdomen, arms, knees, neck, and jowls can be problem areas.
For most men, the love-handles, abdomen, and male breasts (gynecomastia) can be
problem areas. Using tumescent lipo-sculpture, there no longer need be "problem
areas". Tumescent anesthesia has made liposuction safe and effective, which is
why it is the #1 major cosmetic procedure performed in the United States today. Click on the Chapters below to learn more about this procedure. It is recommended that one read all the chapters in order. |
