What are follicular grafts? Hair follicles usually grow in groups of 2, 3, or 4 follicles that are close together. With follicular grafting, these natural groups of follicles are removed together and transplanted. By doing so, a natural appearing transplant is the result.
What are mini-grafts? Minigrafts typically contain 2-4 hair follicles. These grafts are usually used anywhere on the scalp except the hairline. Since small numbers of follicles are used, the result is a natural transplant with good coverage of the scalp.
What are micro-grafts? Micrografts are typically composed of one or two hair follicles. Typically, these are used only at the hairline to create a natural, soft hairline. There is little scalp coverage with these small grafts, so they are not typically used over the top of the scalp.
What medical therapies are available for hair loss? For male-pattern alopecia, Over-the-counter 5% Rogaine (minoxidil) applied to the scalp twice daily can help retain hair and, if one is lucky, help grow new hair. The way that minoxidil (Rogaine) works, is unknown. For female pattern alopecia, 2% Rogaine can be used twice a day, or 5% Rogaine (which is only FDA approved for use in men) once or twice daily. Propecia, which is available by prescription only and is taken as a pill, is taken once a day and blocks the formation of dihidrotestosterone. This has been proven to retain hair in over 80% of men and grow new hair in over 30%. Additionally, some men choose to use both Propecia and Rogaine, although it is not known if there is added benefit in doing so. Some patients choose medical therapy alone, some prefer hair transplantation only, and some utilize both.
