Does the procedure hurt? There is some discomfort during the initial portions of the procedure, when the scalp is numbed using tiny needles. For those afraid of needles, a pill can be taken that makes one relax and feel sleepy. Otherwise, most patients are comfortable and read a book or watch television during the procedure.
How many grafts will I need? This varies from person to person. Someone who is very bald may need 3000 grafts, while someone who is just thinning may require 800.
What can I expect after the procedure? Most patients can return to most normal non-exertional activities the day after the procedure. There typically can be tiny crusts where the grafts are placed that can last 7-14 days. Many patients choose to wear a hat during this period, but this is not necessary. Occasionally, a bandage is placed to be worn overnight.
What is the cost of the procedure? The price varies considerably in the United States ranging from $3 per graft to $35 per graft.
