After Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that, like nearly all other surgical procedures, requires some degree of recovery. The following is a list of common findings after liposuction, and are not complications.

Pain/Discomfort

Most people have minimal discomfort after liposuction (see section on "pain during or after liposuction"). Few have moderate discomfort. In nearly all of these instances, most discomfort is easily controlled with prescription pain medications.

Drainage

With tumescent liposuction, some of the tumescent fluid (tumescent anesthesia) may leak out after the procedure. This is normal and may persist for 36 hours. Most patients will wear a drainage pad to absorb any of this fluid. The fluid may be slightly pink due to tiny amounts of blood that mixes with the tumescent fluid.

Restrictions of Activity

For most body areas treated, one must not resume strenuous activities (exercise, tennis, aerobics, etc.) for several weeks or longer. Light walking is permitted and encouraged. Typically, patients may begin walking the day following the procedure.

Garment use

For most body areas treated (except the neck and jowls), it is recommended that one wear an elastic garment 24 hours a day for up to three weeks then 12 hours a day for several weeks. For example, garments for the lower body often look like bicycle shorts and can be worn under clothing. The garments are usually worn for 3 days without removal (i.e. no showering or bathing) and then can be removed, hand washed with a gentle detergent such as Woolite (do not use bleach), and air-dried. The garment fit fairly snug and take a while to get used to.

Bruising

The amount of bruising varies from individual to individual. Some have no bruising, while others have moderate bruising. Typically, those who are "easy bruisers" will have some bruising. Bruising typically lasts one week or longer. While there is bruising, one should not expose the bruised areas to sun to avoid permanent or prolonged skin discoloration.

When will I notice results?

Most people will notice some immediate improvement, depending upon the amount of fat removed. Although, it often takes six months or longer to really appreciate the final results.

Do I have to have stitches taken out?

No. In nearly all cases, Dr. Bader uses stitches that dissolve under the skin. In some cases, no stitches are used as the cuts are so small.
